Sonic the Hedgehog's second movie outing might have only just been released this year, but it seems Paramount Pictures and Sega Corporation are already focused on the third movie.
Following on from news in May that the team was aiming for a 2024 release, it appears Sega and Paramount have now officially locked in a December 20, 2024 launch date. This was confirmed by the official Sonic movie social media account:
As of June, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie surpassed $400 million at the global box office. In contrast, the original movie banked close to $320 million globally.
In an update back in May, it was also confirmed how the team was already seeking someone to voice the new enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, and it wouldn't necessarily be an existing voice actor (like Tails). Paramount is also working on a Knuckles live-action series, scheduled to launch in the same year.

I hope he also punches faster
I still haven't watched the 2nd movie.
I hope it's a little more creative that the sequel. The second movie felt too safe and by the books.
I can’t wait, it just seems to get better each movie, as 2 in my opinion was better then one. I wonder who’s going to voice shadow in this one.
@Axecon
We watched two different movies then, I thought they did a great job with the sequel the Sonic movies have been the biggest surprise of recent memory
It's back.
Just in time for Christmas 2024
Geez, I'll be 19 when this movie comes out.
Amazing. Here's hoping that some of the female Sonic characters, such as Amy Rose, Rouge, Cream and/or Blaze show up. It's been a brofest until now.
@Anti-Matter I strongly recommend you do. It's amazing. Hopefully they haven't spoiled the post-credit scene for you.
@SmileMan64 Oh boy. When rouge comes to the scene, oh boy may the internet have mercy on her soul.
I absolutely loved both Sonic movies, and I'm looking forward to more. Maybe they can throw Mecha Sonic in the next one.
... but will it be called Sonic 3 & Knuckles?
It’s certainly impressive how they’ve pulled this franchise back from being a laughing stock and turned it into a genuinely successful venture.
Admittedly, the movies themselves don’t seem to do anything very original. The plot, tone, humour, character dynamics, aesthetic, random inclusion of the US military, etc. all seem C&Ped from every other ‘animated supernatural character visits the real world’ movie out there.
Still, what the movies lack in originality, they make up for in approachability, and many people seem perfectly satisfied with the result.
I’m sure the third movie will do just fine!
I had a blast watching the second movie so I'm looking forward to this one. I just hope they don't milk it to death though like what Marvel do to their characters.
@Snatcher The Internet has evolved beyond Humanity's control. No one and nothing is safe.
The films are fine, but SEGA really should focus a bit more on the quality of the games. Sonic is still a video game character at first, unless they want to turn him, like Disney did with Mickey Mouse, more into a brand character.
@SmileMan64 “I fear no man…But that thing leans into chair it scares me.”
@RubyCarbuncle Agreed, let’s hope.
I just hope Jim Carrey returns.
No Jim Carrey, no care
I hope Jim Carrey says yes to this and we get good voice actor for Shadow.
Nice, so mario and sonic will be competing again. Both movies in 2023.
Jim Carrey needs to return ...I hope the third movie will follow or at least be inspired by Sonic Adventure 2, as that would make for a very interesting story.
If only the games were even half as interesting ...or even half decent.
@Snatcher
Jack Black 😝
@sneaky_sasquatch Gimme, Gimme!
@steventonysmith Totally agree. It's extraordinary how it went from people basically making fun of it to something very successful. Those criticising the movies are in the minority anyway.
@Heroofthenexus Your comment is terrible.
I just want to know if Jim Carey is sticking to his guns on not being involved. I bet they were offering good $$s
